Ancient City of Shuayb

The Ancient City of Şuayb is 11 km after Hanel Ba'rur. It is 38 km away from Harran. The Ancient City of Şuayb is a settlement dating back to the Late Roman period (4th-5th centuries AD). It is defined as the Ephesus of the Southeast due to its architecture resembling Ephesus. It is narrated that the Prophet Şuayb used a cave here as a home and place of worship. This ancient city takes its name from this narration.

A cave in the region is still visited as the shrine of the Prophet Shuayb. The common view reached as a result of research conducted by scientists at various dates in this settlement is that the name Shuayb City means "Old Human City" in Arabic and that the houses in this settlement were the summer houses of the people living in the Harran Plain.

These houses were built in the style of typical Roman houses and consist of a courtyard with a triangular pediment, a roof and a wall surrounding it, and a cellar carved into the main rock under the house. There is a water well inside each house. Entrances to houses are made through doors located in the courtyard walls. These doors open onto grid-planned streets. No comprehensive archaeological research has been conducted in the ancient city of Şuayb to date. Archaeological studies to be conducted will reveal the unknown and mysterious aspects of this ancient city.
