Sogmatar Ancient City

The Sogmatar Ancient City is reached 15 km after the Şuayb Ancient City. It is 53 km away from Harran. The region, which dates back to the Roman period (2nd century AD), has been scientifically determined to be a cult center where the Harranites worshiped the moon and planet gods in the Tektek Mountains region during the Abgar Kingdom. In the Sogmatar cult site; a cave (Pognon Cave) where the moon god Sin was worshiped, a hill (Sacred Hill) with reliefs of the gods and inscriptions carved into the ground on its slopes, 6 square and round-plan mausoleums (Monumental Tombs), There are many rock tombs carved into the castle and the main rock.
Sogmatar was founded by the people who fled the region due to the intense attacks of the Parthians (Iranians) on the Urfa region in 165 AD and maintained its cult center feature until the Islamic Period. It is understood from some religious motifs found in Sogmatar that the people in the Shuayb City settlement used Sogmatar as a cemetery and place of worship.
In Sogmatar, there are water wells carved into the main rock to meet the water need, like in the Shuayb City. The historical well in the Sogmatar Ancient City is thought to have been built by the Prophet. It is said to be the Well of Moses. The road that continues after Sogmatar will take you to the Urfa-Viransehir junction after 27 km.
When you go 29 km east on this road in the direction of Viransehir, you will come across the Eyyub Nebi Town junction. After 16 km from the junction, you will reach the shrine of the Sultan of Patience Hz. Eyyub Prophet.
